Like many, I’ve watched the last 24 hours of election coverage over in the US in horror. To me, it’s both a sign of where things are at and a sign of what’s to come in Australia at the next election. Recent polling of Australian men under 30 found that 43% would vote for Trump given a chance. The problem is no longer at our doorstep — it’s moved in, and is making one hell of a mess. I fully expect conservatives in Australia to get more Trumpian following this result.

To me, looking at the US and sneering, as is generally the case online by many Australians whenever something happens in America, is pointless. The same push to the hard right is already unfolding here. To be frank, that sort of reductionist analysis doesn’t do anything except set people up for future “surprises”.
